Chapter 1070 - 770: Peeping
Half a month passed once more.Everything remained the same, with Doctor Su Qinglan still arriving punctually every day at Qianqiu Palace to check Shang Ruyi’s pulse. Apart from daily military exercises and discussing important matters with Shen Wuzheng and the others, Yu Wenye also stayed in the palace most of the time to accompany her. Occasionally, Yu Wenquan would summon Princess Qin to Liangyi Hall for meals together, which was quite an honor.
However, people are never satisfied.
Perhaps it was because, ever since marrying into the Yuwen Family, she had rarely stayed quietly at home, almost always traveling south and north with Yu Wenye. After resting for three months, Shang Ruyi found it hard to remain idle, feeling that the surrounding palace walls were like a cage around her, making it hard for her to breathe and obstructing her view. Coupled with seeing only a few people come and go each day, saying the same familiar reminders, she felt quite bored.
So, that evening, as Yu Wenye finished bathing, exuding warmth as he lay beside her and gently held her in his arms with the atmosphere just right, she made a request to go outside the palace for a walk.
Yu Wenye immediately furrowed his brow, "What do you want to do outside the palace?"
Shang Ruyi replied, "What do you think?"
Yu Wenye looked down at her with a face full of dispiritedness. In recent days, he had often heard his wife sighing, sometimes sitting by the bed gazing at the blue sky outside as if she were a bird longing for freedom. Knowing her lively nature well, he understood what Shang Ruyi wanted.
So he said, "Isn’t this palace big enough for you to explore?"
Shang Ruyi said, "I see the same scenery over and over again, like the Thousand-step Corridor, the Mountain and Water Pool, and Lingyan Pavilion... I could sketch them all."
Yu Wenye couldn’t help but smile.
With the affection Yu Wenquan currently showed towards Shang Ruyi, it wasn’t a big deal to grant her request to leave the palace. However, Yu Wenye was still concerned and said, "But you’re pregnant with a big belly."
Shang Ruyi immediately said, "Doctor Su said after five months, it’s stable. Besides, during the first three months, I was riding horses and traveling in coaches without any issues. This child is strong."
"..."
"Moreover, the school in Changle Square is almost finished. I spent so many silver taels; I should go see it with my own eyes."
"..."
"You should just tell the Emperor."
In the soft, slightly coquettish tone, there was a hint of acting spoiled. Even if Yu Wenye had a heart of stone, he would have melted by now. Besides, he asked himself why he could go out for work every day but had to keep Shang Ruyi confined in the palace, which indeed seemed unfair.
After thinking it over, he said, "I can ask the Emperor for permission, but you have to promise me not to wander about recklessly, and stay away from crowded places."
Shang Ruyi immediately smiled, "I know!"
Yu Wenye smiled and shook his head.
The next day, he personally went to Liangyi Hall to request permission, and Yu Wenquan did not make it difficult for him, just giving a few reminders like him, and ordered horses and carriages to be prepared. Thus, Shang Ruyi happily rode the carriage out of the palace, where Jiang Kesong was already waiting outside with a team to escort her, and they headed along the wide Vermilion Bird Street towards Changle Square.
After more than half an hour, they finally arrived.
Changle Square was a place Shang Ruyi was already familiar with, and she even recognized some passersby. Tushere cautiously helped her down from the carriage. As she walked into the square, she saw the newly completed school buildings, grand and spacious, albeit not luxuriously adorned, exuding a sense of scholarly ambience. Behind the school, there were dormitories for students coming to study from outside the city or afar.
Following Yu Wenqian’s advice, the tuition at this school was considerably cheaper than other academies and private schools, though fees were still charged, including for dormitory lodging.
Shang Ruyi looked inside and out, and walked out satisfied.
Just as she reached the entrance, she saw several small heads peeking inside curiously. They were children from the neighborhood with small braids, some with runny noses, but their eyes were wide with amazement as they gazed at the elegantly dressed lady adorned with precious jewels.
Shang Ruyi smiled and waved at them, and the children shrank back timidly, except for one slightly older girl who came forward.
Her clothing was relatively tidy, yet made of faded fabric, indicating a modest family background, and she carried a food box—likely from a nearby restaurant. The girl approached with some trepidation but greeted Shang Ruyi politely, evidently aware of the lady’s distinguished status.
