Chapter 7 Arrival at the Front
Chapter 7 Arrival at the Front
The rain showed no signs of abating; on the contrary, it became even more violent, accompanied by thunder.
The smell of gunpowder in the canyon was quickly washed away by the rain, leaving only mud and a few charred corpses.
Nishikawa Tetsu squatted beside the corpse of an Iwa ninja, deftly removing the still intact ninja tool bag and then taking off the Iwa ninja standard tactical vest, which was somewhat damaged but still usable.
"Hey, Nishikawa Toru."
As Fugaku Uchiha watched Nishikawa Tetsu practically "loot" the corpse, his brows furrowed again. As the young head of the Uchiha clan, he had never seen such thuggish behavior.
"Isn't the compensation Konoha gave you enough? They even stripped the clothes off a dead man."
"This vest is made of high-density fiber and can sell for five thousand taels on the black market. That ninja tool pouch contains three ration pills and five explosive tags, worth two thousand taels."
Without turning his head, Nishikawa Tetsu skillfully packed the spoils into his backpack, saying matter-of-factly, "Fugaku-senpai, war is all about resources. For a commoner ninja like me without clan support, this is my supply."
Fugaku Uchiha's lips twitched. He wanted to refute, but found that what the other party said made a lot of sense. In the end, he could only stammer out, "Whatever."
Minato Namikaze smiled awkwardly to the side, but he didn't think there was anything wrong with what Tetsu Nishikawa did.
The battle he had just fought made him realize that on the ever-changing battlefield, everything could be the key to survival.
"Cleanup complete. No clues about our identities were left, except for the crater that was blown up."
Nishikawa Tetsu stood up, slung his backpack, which was now bulging, over his shoulder, and clapped his hands: "Let's go. The smell of blood here will soon attract wild animals or other patrols."
"Hmph, do I need you to give me orders?"
Fugaku Uchiha snorted coldly, turned around, and leaped onto the rock wall. Although he remained defiant, this time he didn't rush forward at full speed as recklessly as before. Instead, he deliberately lowered his body, maintaining a speed that the three of them could keep up with.
……
Beyond the canyon lies a muddy plain.
This is the border area between the Land of Rain and the Land of Fire, and also one of the most brutal areas of the Second Shinobi World War.
Along the way, the three saw many villages destroyed by the war. Ruins stood in the rain, and occasionally a few wild dogs could be seen scavenging for food in the ruins. The air was filled with the smell of rotting corpses and burnt wood.
Minato Namikaze, who had initially been somewhat excited, gradually became serious and silent.
This is war, a war filled with endless suffering and death.
Nishikawa Tetsu remained calm. His history books and documentaries from his previous life had prepared him for the cruelty of war, but he didn't say anything. He just silently recorded the surrounding terrain data.
A few hours later.
In the dim rain ahead, rows of lights finally appeared.
It was a huge camp, surrounded by barbed wire and sensory barriers. On the towering watchtowers, beams of searchlights swept back and forth in the rainy night.
Konoha's front-line headquarters.
"Who goes there!"
As they approached the camp gate, two ANBU members wearing Konoha vests appeared instantly, their long swords crossed, blocking their path.
"Uchiha Fugaku has been ordered to escort a newly promoted genin to the front lines."
Fugaku Uchiha stepped forward, took out the mission scroll containing the toad that was supposed to contact him, and handed it over.
The ANBU member took the scroll, examined it, and then looked at the toad. His tense body finally relaxed: "So it's Jonin Fugaku. You've worked hard. Jiraiya-sama is directing the tents and waiting."
The door slowly opened.
Upon entering the camp, a strong smell of disinfectant hits you.
Everywhere you look, there are medical ninjas rushing around and wounded people lying on stretchers groaning.
Bandages, blood, severed limbs—this is a more visceral gateway to hell than the battlefield.
Minato Namikaze watched as a ninja who had lost both legs was carried to his side, and unconsciously clenched his fists.
"Stop looking."
Nishikawa Tetsu said softly, "You'll get used to it. Only those who survive have the right to sympathize with others."
Fugaku Uchiha glanced back at the two men, said nothing, and led them straight through the wounded soldiers' area to a huge tent in the very center of the camp.
"Come in."
Before the announcement could be made, a deep, slightly weary voice came from inside the tent.
As I lifted the curtain, a warm current mixed with the smell of tobacco wafted out.
The tent was large, with a huge sand table in the center, covered with flags representing different factions. A tall man with long white hair and wearing a red outer robe stood with his back to the entrance, staring at the location of Amegakure on the sand table, looking troubled.
Hearing footsteps, the man turned around.
His face was painted with red greasepaint, and the word "oil" on his headband was particularly eye-catching under the light.
At this moment, his face showed none of his usual frivolity, only the majesty of a commander.
Jiraiya, one of the Legendary Sannin of Konoha.
"Oh? Fugaku."
Jiraiya's gaze swept over the three, finally settling on the somewhat disheveled Nishikawa Toru and Namikaze Minato. His eyes softened slightly. "A little later than I expected. Did you run into trouble on the way?"
"We encountered an ambush squad of Iwa ninja."
Fugaku Uchiha stood ramrod straight and reported to his superior, "One Earth Release Jonin and three Chunin."
Jiraiya paused, his hand holding the pen still, and frowned slightly. "An elite squad from Iwagakure? You avoided them?"
In his view, it was already a stroke of luck that he managed to escape from the ambush of the elite Iwa ninja squad while carrying two recent graduates as burdens.
"No."
Fugaku Uchiha paused, seemingly organizing his thoughts, before saying somewhat stiffly, "Total annihilation."
"Hmm, if we can escape, then we won't—wait, what did you say?"
Jiraiya abruptly raised his head, his eyes wide like saucers, thinking he had misheard. "Total annihilation? You?"
He knows this team's composition very well.
Although Fugaku Uchiha had awakened the Three Tomoe, he was still young; Minato Namikaze and Toru Nishikawa were even more like fledglings fresh out of school.
It would be a miracle if this team wasn't wiped out by the elite Iwa ninja squad, let alone managed to turn the tables and kill them?
"Yes."
Fugaku Uchiha took a deep breath. Although he was reluctant to admit it, he turned to the side and pointed to Toru Nishikawa behind him: "It's mainly because of this guy's tactics."
"Oh?"
Jiraiya then truly took a closer look at the unremarkable black-haired boy standing in the corner. He remembered this child; his report card only showed a perfect score on the written test, while his other grades were quite average.
"Nishikawa Toru, right?" Jiraiya stroked his chin with interest. "Tell me, how did you do that?"
Nishikawa Tetsu stepped forward, bowed respectfully without being humble or arrogant, and then calmly uttered four words:
"Dust explosion."
He then described in the simplest terms the process of creating the explosion using terrain, enclosed spaces, a mixture of flour and aluminum powder, and detonators.
As Nishikawa Tetsu recounted the story, Jiraiya's expression shifted from surprise to astonishment, and finally to an indescribable strangeness.
He turned to look at Fugaku Uchiha, as if seeking confirmation: "Really?"
Fugaku Uchiha nodded with a dark expression: "That Jonin from Iwa ninja died a horrible death."
"Ha ha ha ha!"
After a brief silence, Jiraiya suddenly burst into a hearty laugh, slapping Nishikawa Tetsu's thin shoulder so hard that he almost fell to the ground.
"Interesting! Absolutely interesting! They used bread flour to blow up a Jonin from Iwagakure? If that old fogey Onoki knew about this, he'd probably break his back from anger!"
The weariness in Jiraiya's eyes seemed to have dissipated considerably. He looked at the three boys in front of him, his eyes sparkling with a light of hope.
"The Uchiha's eye power, a commoner's genius, and another..." Jiraiya paused, looking at Nishikawa Tetsu, "...a scientifically minded brain."
"It seems that my fifth squad might bring a little surprise to this dull battlefield."
Jiraiya's smile vanished, replaced by a serious expression. "Welcome to the battlefield, Konoha's fledglings. Go and rest. Tomorrow... special training will begin."
