"Am I that scary?"

Jael frowned as the question left his lips. He didn't care that she was scared of him but somehow the constant smell of fear off her was starting to piss him off.

"Vampires are scary," she said.

"I see." There was nothing to dispute, she was right. The fact that she wasn't completely terrified of him considering she had been forced into the marriage showed she was pretty strong. He didn't think any human would agree to this.

He also thought she was holding out nicely, he had expected her to want to run back to her father but she seemed to be settling in.

She looked like she was about to say more but instead she turned to face the shelves staring intensely. She took a few steps away from him as she ran her fingers over the books.

"These are all human authors," she exclaimed and pulled out a book. Jael didn't see the name, he wasn't curious enough to check.

"My mother was a collector."

"Mother?" She asked, her hair making a soft sound as she spun. If he had been closer, it would have wiped him across the face.

"Yes," he said with a raised brow. "Why do you look so surprised that I have a mother?"

"I thought..."

Jael frowned at her pause. "Speak, I am genuinely curious to hear what you humans gossip about us."

She looked up at him and her hands fell to her side, "According to the stories, vampires are creatures from hell, that's why you can't stand sunlight and won't die."

"There are many ways to kill a vampire. I don't see how this translates to an absence of a maternal parent." @@@@

It was not that he had a difficult relationship with his parents or his mother. Quite the contrary, they had a good enough relationship at least in vampire terms. They weren't trying to get rid of him and they found his presence bearable as he had found theirs.

However, their deaths had pissed him off. There was no need for them to die in such a measly manner. They were the King and the Queen of the vampire race. Dying at the hands of a paler was a stain he would not forgive them so easily for.

If they had enough blood, protecting themselves against palers would be child's play. Kidnapping humans and turning them into blood slaves did not seem like a good enough long-term plan.

The nobles still didn't like the plan, especially the part where they had to give up the humans they had forcefully gotten hold of. He had promised them enough blood for their cooperation.

Still, he knew they were only going along with his plan because he was the King and it was easier than banding together to go against him.

They would prefer to subjugate humans. However, this was a hassle he wasn't interested in. There were a lot of them and keeping them in line would prove to be a lot of work than it was worth.

Jael hit the stairs two at a time. He didn't have a lot of hours before the sun would set and once it did, he wouldn't be able to sleep again. The headache was already driving him nuts.

He got to the door of his room and saw a servant with his head bent standing in front of it. It was one of the twins. He frowned, the fact that the young vampire was waiting for him instead of coming back at a later time meant this was pretty important.

"Mack!" He called out when he was close enough. Wondering why the boy was not reacting to his presence.

The young vampire jerked, he had fallen asleep on his feet. Jael didn't blame him if he had his way he would be asleep on his bed too.

"My Lord," he cried and bowed his head.

"Why are you outside my door at this hour? You better

have a good enough reason." Jael squinted, he was still in a crappy mood.

"Yes, your grace. You said to let you know as soon as one of them awakens. Sir Danag is awake."
