Chapter 319 is quite well hidden!
Gu Ruoning's gaze fell on his bulging backpack, her joy immediately mixed with a hint of suspicion: "Ye Fan, what's in there? You didn't just hoard a month's worth of smelly socks and dirty clothes, did you? Did you bring them back so your old lady can do your laundry for free?"
As she spoke, she reached for the zipper on her backpack.
Before Ye Fan could stop it, the zipper was pulled open with a "whoosh".
In an instant, stacks of brand-new, pink 100-yuan bills, exuding the fresh scent of ink, poured out of the backpack like a flood bursting its banks, with some bundles even rolling onto the floor!
The living room fell into a deathly silence.
Only the pile of pink banknotes gleamed dazzlingly under the light.
Gu Ruoning's smile froze completely, her pupils contracted sharply, she gasped, her voice trembling with unprecedented severity and terror as she stared intently at Ye Fan:
"Ye-Fan-!!! What...what did you do? Did you break the law?" Her finger trembled slightly as she pointed to the pile of money on the ground.
Ye Linzhang was also startled by the sight and was wide awake. He quickly stepped forward, squatted down and picked up a bundle of banknotes. The brand-new seal and bank stamp were clearly visible.
He looked up at Ye Fan, his eyes filled with the same shock, doubt, and deep worry as his wife's: "Xiao Fan! What... what's going on? Where did all this money come from?"
Seeing his parents' expressions of utter alarm, as if they were about to betray him, Ye Fan was both amused and exasperated. He quickly explained, "Dad! Mom! What are you thinking! I didn't break the law! This money is clean; I earned it myself! How could a child of the Ye family do anything illegal or disorderly?"
"You earned that yourself?" Gu Ruoning's tone rose again, filled with utter disbelief. "Are you kidding me?! You haven't seen me for a month, and you could have earned that much money?"
The couple were of one mind and questioned each other in unison.
"I really earned it myself! Why would I lie to you!" Ye Fan spread his hands helplessly, but his tone was unusually serious. "Sit down first and let me explain slowly."
He had originally planned to tell his parents about starting a company during the National Day holiday so that he could focus on his career. He also remembered that he had promised to buy Lao Ye a new car during the summer vacation!
The atmosphere in the living room instantly became serious and somber.
The elderly Ye couple sat on the sofa with stern faces, while Ye Fan was "ordered" to sit on the single sofa opposite them, creating a scene reminiscent of a "trial by three people".
The conspicuous pile of banknotes lay quietly on the floor beside the coffee table, becoming the most eye-catching backdrop to this family meeting.
Gu Ruoning slammed her hand on the coffee table, her eyebrows furrowing. "Stop grinning! Explain yourself! What's going on with this money?!"
"Let me explain." Ye Fan's smile faded, and he sat up straight. "Simply put, I started my own business, opened a company, and it's been doing quite well lately. That's only part of it."
"Start a company?" Gu Ruoning and Ye Linzhang stared wide-eyed at the same time, as if they had heard a fairy tale.
Gu Ruoning bombarded her with questions: "When did you start it? You've only been in university for a month! Start a company? What did you use to start it? Where did the capital come from?"
Ye Linzhang also frowned, staring intently at his son.
"Don't rush, let me explain slowly."
Ye Fan cleared his throat and began to "confess," "Actually, I started preparing back in May of this year. You guys remember that time when I was carrying around black plastic bags every day, buying a bunch of lemons and ice, trying to make some kind of handmade lemon tea, right?"
Mr. and Mrs. Ye exchanged a glance and nodded.
During that period, Ye Fan was indeed acting mysteriously, often returning home very late, smelling like lemons.
"Yes, that's how I saved up my first pot of gold," Ye Fan continued. "Then, the opportunity came. There's the World Cup in June, right? I used the money I earned from selling lemon tea, and... um..."
He paused, glancing at his parents' faces: "And the scholarships I received from the school and the city after the college entrance exam, I used them all to buy sports lottery tickets for the World Cup."
"What?! You used your scholarship money to gamble on soccer too?" Gu Ruoning exclaimed, jumping up and grabbing a cushion from the sofa to throw at him. Her face was pale with anger. "You spendthrift! You've got some nerve! That's your scholarship money! It's..."
"Mom! Mom! Calm down! Calm down!" Ye Fan quickly raised his hands in surrender, speaking rapidly, "I didn't gamble! I did the research and analysis! And the results were good! I made money! A lot of money! Really! I haven't touched the lottery since!"
He emphasized the last sentence.
Ye Linzhang, who was standing to the side, was so shocked when he heard that his son had staked his scholarship money that he almost dropped the cigarette in his hand. He wanted to persuade his wife to calm down, but he felt that what his son had done was really outrageous. He moved his lips, but in the end he didn't dare to say anything. He just looked at his wife nervously.
Gu Ruoning held up a pillow, her chest heaving violently, looking at her son's face which seemed to say, "I was wrong, but the result was good." She was both angry and anxious.
She took a few deep breaths and looked at her son, who was half a head taller than her and whose eyes revealed a maturity and composure far beyond his age. Somehow, her anger was gradually replaced by a complex emotion—fear, shock, but more than anything, a complex feeling of worry and hidden pride at seeing a fledgling eagle take flight.
Gu Ruoning raised an eyebrow, crossed her arms, and said unhappily, "Fine! Even if you made money betting on football... ugh! Buying lottery tickets! Then why did you keep such a big thing as starting a company a secret from us? You think you're all grown up now?"
"Hehe, of course not, Mom!" Seeing that his mother's mood had calmed down a bit, Ye Fan quickly went over and fawned over her, massaging her shoulders. "It's not that I'm hiding it from you, it's just that the company was just starting out back then, and there were so many things to manage. I was afraid that if I told you, you would worry, and I was also afraid that if it didn't work out, you would be disappointed! Now that we've established ourselves and achieved some success, we've immediately come back to 'confess'!"
Gu Ruoning felt her son's strong fingers pressing on her shoulder and listened to his "sweet talk" explanation, and her anger subsided a little.
She watched as her husband, Ye Linzhang, carefully bent down to pick up the scattered banknotes on the ground, and looked at the familiar yet somewhat unfamiliar expression on her son's face, filled with confidence and responsibility. In the end, all her worries, complaints, and anger turned into a long sigh filled with endless emotion.
She raised her hand and gently patted the back of Ye Fan's hand on her shoulder. Her voice lowered, carrying a hint of weariness and relief: "You're becoming more and more determined. Fine, you're all grown up now, you have your own path to walk. Just remember to be an upright person, do things honestly, don't go astray, and don't do anything against your conscience... then your parents will let you be."
Under the lamplight, a barely perceptible glint of water seemed to flash in Gu Ruoning's eyes.
She knew that the little boy in her arms, whom she had to take care of in everything, had truly flown away.
