Chapter 41 Ash Bomb
Chapter 41 Ash Bomb
Summoners are a special type of ability that exists only in legends.
In the early days of the Empire, Spirit Summoners were the subject of poets' praises, and large numbers of them joined the army to conquer the world for the Iron Emperor.
Iron Emperor has a legion of summoners under his command. They can use special "psychic energy" to guide other armies and heal the wounded. When summoners gather together, they can even gather tremendous psychic power to crush the enemy army.
But towards the end of the Great Crusade, all news and records about the Summoners disappeared, and even the Legion's name was erased by the Inquisition.
Any literature related to spirit summoners is "taboo," and anyone who reads it will be hunted down by inquisitors from the Inquisition.
Just a year later, people forgot about them. Even Simon, who worked in the locked library, only knew that such a legion had ever existed.
All the documents recording their past had long been thrown into the furnace and burned by Simon's colleagues.
"I know about spirit summoners, but only a little about them. What are spirit summoner urns?"
Elphis did not answer directly, but instead gave an example:
"If I broke your legs and forced you to spend the rest of your life in a sickbed, would you hate me?"
"nonsense."
“That’s how necromancers are,” Elphis nodded. “Releasing psychic energy is their instinct, but the Inquisition secretly imprisons them in dark dungeons, where they are killed if they release even a little psychic energy, forcing them to suppress their desire to release it with fear.”
"Year after year, they spent the rest of their lives in unease, pain, and fear. One of the spirit summoners lived to the age of sixty, and his remains are what we collected."
Simon immediately understood that the so-called "bone jar" was too poetic; it was actually just an urn.
Using ashes to make bombs? I can't believe they even thought of that.
"The psychic energy of the summoner resides in his body. His bones are filled with his anger accumulated over the past sixty years, and of course, they are also brimming with sixty years of psychic energy. Once the urn containing the bones is released from its restraints and thrown out... we have roughly calculated that it will create an annihilation zone with a radius of about ten meters, and everything will be annihilated."
"Annihilation?" Simon repeated the word he had uttered.
"Yes, annihilation. Everything within the range simply disappears, whether it evaporates or is transported elsewhere."
Simon silently recalled and calculated in his mind that an annihilation zone with a radius of about ten meters would be enough to destroy half of the Hungry Angel's body.
The self-destruction of the Angel of Death burned the skeleton of the Hungry Angel, and the skeleton regenerated new flesh very quickly. But if it were "annihilation," which directly cut off half of its body, it would have to slowly regenerate from the skeleton, and the speed would definitely be slower. They would have plenty of time to make their move.
But Simon soon realized a new problem...
"How exactly do you plan to detonate that bone urn you mentioned?" His eyes were sharp. "You don't want me to be the one who detonates it, do you?"
Elphis's answer remained calm; he slowly extended three fingers:
"Three conditions need to be met for the person to detonate the ossuary..."
"Condition 1: You cannot be a member of the Empire, nor a cave raider. If you belong to either of these two factions, it will detonate the moment you release the safety device. This cannot be faked. The residual psionic energy in the bone jar will read your consciousness and then make a judgment."
"Condition Two: We need someone who can get close to the Hungry Angel. I can't entrust such an important task to a weak person. He must be strong enough to cross the battlefield and reach the Hungry Angel."
"Condition Three: He needs to have enough arm strength to throw the bone jar into the hungry angel's gaping maw at the last second, annihilating only its lower half so that we can have the opportunity to harvest the flesh of the evidence of sin."
All three conditions are indispensable.
"So you found me?" Simon asked.
"That's right, I originally wanted to give this task to Mr. Bell, but he's not agile enough and is prone to making wrong judgments due to recklessness." The eyes behind the iron mask stared intently at him. "Mr. Simon, you are my best choice."
Here we go again, Simon sighed helplessly...
This means that Elphis had been monitoring him and had witnessed his skills.
Seeing that Simon was still clearly doubtful, Elfis immediately revealed his chips...
"Mr. Simon, I heard from Bell that you want to leave the abyss, right?"
"That's right." Simon nodded in agreement.
Elphis stroked his chin: "The Abyss is still unstable. If you can hand over the flesh of the Hungry Angel as evidence, we will take you to the second level. Once the outside and inside of the Abyss are stable, we will send you out through the tunnel, and you will be free."
This was undoubtedly a price that would appeal to Simon.
Elphis turned his head to look at the camp in the distance:
"Not only you, I guarantee your companions will also receive preferential treatment from the cave raiders, and when the time is right, we will send them out as well."
He really knows how to negotiate; he hit the nail on the head with everything Simon said.
However, Simon had to add a few safeguards before agreeing to his request.
"Alright, I can cooperate with you, but I have two conditions." Simon went straight to discussing the conditions.
"Please..."
"First, I need to test it. I must be sure that the urn you prepared won't annihilate me along with it the moment the safety is opened before I will cooperate with you."
"I promise you, we happen to have a trial version of the bone graft vessel," Elphis readily agreed.
"The second condition is that if I eventually obtain the flesh of the Hungry Angel as evidence of its sins, I will keep it for myself and will not give it to you immediately. I will give it to you after I leave the Abyss."
Elphis was clearly taken aback.
"I cannot agree to that. After all, we cave raiders are just ants struggling to survive under the empire's feet. If you suddenly change your mind, we will not be able to cope."
He seemed afraid that Simon would refuse, so he immediately added a diplomatic explanation:
"However, the situation in the battle is complex and ever-changing. If you end up getting that piece of meat, I agree that you can keep it for yourself and hand it over to us when you leave the abyss. But if we get that piece of meat... don't worry, we will still send you out of the abyss as promised."
Simon nodded; this was undoubtedly a possibility acceptable to both sides.
"When will the urn containing the Summoner's bones arrive?" Simon asked again.
"Today, they will ascend to the first level in a hot air balloon, carrying our ultimate weapon... Prepare for tomorrow, the third day is the final battle."
