Chapter 915 Gwen's Emotions Remain Stable
Earth 616, Monday, January 20, 2014.
Before he knew it, it was time for school to start again. Peter was now a student in the second semester of his junior year (although it's hard to say whether the holiday system in the US is three semesters or two), but the school's presence in Peter's life was becoming increasingly insignificant.
To be honest, he could theoretically skip a grade and go to university right now, but the reason he doesn't is that slacking off doesn't matter where he is, and Peter is at least more familiar with the environment of Midtown High School.
"So, you have a secret mission, and you'll be leaving on February 1st. It might take you a month or two to get back."
After listening to Peter's story, Harry seemed thoughtful: "So, there haven't been any Spider-Men in New York for several months?"
"Probably. I hope nothing goes wrong, but this matter is really very important."
Peter explained the next steps to Harry and Amadeus (mainly Harry): if Spider-Man wasn't in New York, the Web Site would still need to operate as usual. For example, Gwen and Cindy would come in handy. However, speaking of which, although Cindy is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Peter didn't seem to have seen Nick Fury assign her any missions.
Even Lightning's missions are relatively few, and they are generally quite simple and straightforward escort missions.
On the contrary, Jessica, despite not having been with S.H.I.E.L.D. for very long, always participates in S.H.I.E.L.D. missions, and she seems to enjoy it. According to Harry, ever since she handed over the detective agency's affairs to him, Jessica Drew has practically disappeared, becoming difficult to contact; only Felicia knows where she is.
"So, the next ones protecting New York are Ghost Spider, Silk, and possibly Agent Venom and Spider-Woman."
"Yes, that's great. I believe New Yorkers will discover, after Spider-Man leaves, how come there are so many other spiders on Earth?"
After Harry finished complaining, he looked at Peter and asked, "When were you planning to leave again?"
"The 25th, if all goes well," Peter had timed it perfectly right at the last minute, "Then I need to go to the multiverse to ask some friends for help."
"So you'll be all wet by the end of the first week of school?" Harry said understandingly. "It's okay, these next few months will be perfectly safe, nothing will happen."
Peter thought to himself that it might not be so simple. On one hand, Malekith's War of the Worlds was about to begin, but there was no need to worry about that. Loki would most likely also be going to participate in the Secret War, so Malekith would definitely not start the war until he returned or confirmed his death.
On the other hand, there's Hydra. According to the MCU timeline, Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. are about to go to war. In Secret Wars, a large number of troops will be drawn from the heroes' side, which is a good thing for Hydra: they might take advantage of this time to launch their Insight Project.
—But speaking of which, the MCU's Project Insight, which plans to control the world with three airborne aircraft carriers and a satellite network, seems like a joke in the 616 universe.
Peter fell into thought, then he received a message. He checked the time; class hadn't started yet, so he looked at it. The message was from Felicia. She said she had calmed Gwen down, but if Peter really intended to leave, he should invite Gwen out for a few days and talk to her properly.
Peter thought about it for a moment and felt that Felicia meant that she hadn't handled it at all, so Peter still had to take over.
Peter then replied directly: Are you even capable?
Felicia first sent a question mark, then seemed to realize something and immediately messaged Peter saying that Gwen just wanted to play for a few days before he left.
"What do you mean by 'play for a few days'? School's already started, it's not winter break, are you suggesting I skip class?"
Peter shook his head helplessly, then thought for a moment. Finally, he sent Felicia a message to express his gratitude. After she replied, "I'll wait for your thank-you gift," Peter turned off his phone.
To be fair, if Peter really intended to participate in the Secret Wars, Gwen certainly couldn't stop him. Moreover, from any perspective, Gwen had no reason to stop Peter. Peter also knew that Gwen's concern for him was the only reason she didn't want him to participate in the Secret Wars.
That's why Peter planned to reassure Gwen before leaving.
Cindy, on the other hand, was much more relaxed, but this was largely because Cindy herself was not very willing to express these emotions. For example, when Nick Fury wanted to use her as bait, she actually endured a group of LMDs living in her house for half a year, just like her own family.
If he hadn't asked that day, this behavior might have continued. He didn't believe that old bastard Fury would have stopped on his own.
But if that's the case, does it mean that I don't pay enough attention to the people around me?
Peter was deep in thought when, just before class was about to start, he texted Gwen about his plans to go somewhere. His phone immediately started vibrating in response. Peter glanced at the time and realized it was indeed almost time for class, and Gwen still hadn't finished speaking.
He paused for a moment, then glanced at the seat next to him. As a school with a flexible class schedule, there was no such thing as a fixed seat. However, since the classrooms and students were not likely to change, there were some seats that were considered default.
For example, Cindy didn't come today.
Peter first asked Cindy why she hadn't come to school today. Then the literature teacher walked into the classroom. Peter glanced at his phone and saw that Gwen hadn't finished speaking, so he sent a message saying "The teacher is here," turned off the vibrator, and put his phone in his desk.
The tedious literature class dragged on endlessly. When the bell rang, everyone stood up, grabbed their bags, and headed to the next classroom. Peter stood up and glanced at his phone, first checking Cindy's reply—because messages here are usually shorter.
Cindy's message was simple, just saying that her family was busy moving and her parents were planning to go back to their home country. Peter replied with "It's okay," then read Gwen's message. He had no idea where Gwen got so many places to go; he had been in New York for so long and had no idea there were so many places to visit.
"So Felicia convinced Gwen by getting her to plan a trip to New York? I didn't know it could be that easy—okay, let's meet after school."
