Chapter 72 New Mission
Chapter 72 New Mission
Yuri did not answer, which was taken as tacit agreement.
He continued, "What you don't know is that after returning to Camp 17, Vorov approached me privately. He offered ten percent of the profits in exchange for keeping you in his camp."
Lu Ye's pupils contracted, not expecting that Wolf would be willing to go to such great lengths to target him.
Yuri flicked his cigarette ash: "I suspect that back at Camp 17, if I hadn't spoken up, Vorov would have shot you and that man dead!"
Lu Ye nodded: "Indeed, given Vorov's personality, the lives of ordinary soldiers are less than ants in his eyes."
"I suggested you go on a reconnaissance mission at the chemical plant, and Vorov just went along with it," Yuri sneered. "He was certain you wouldn't come back."
Lu Ye fell silent.
Combining what Vasily had said that morning, he finally understood.
Vorov must have known that he had been in contact with Vasily, and adhering to the principle of "better to kill the innocent than let the guilty go free," which is why he repeatedly considered killing him.
Yuri looked at Lu Ye, who seemed lost in thought, and his tone became extremely stern: "Remember what you just promised me! Don't go looking for trouble with Vorov. He has very powerful backers in the high command of the Southern Theater Command military."
Looking at Yuri's nervous expression, Lu Ye suddenly smiled, picked up his wine glass, and said, "Boss, do you think I'm the kind of person who overestimates myself and rushes headlong into a flame? My life is very precious right now."
Yuri's tense face finally relaxed, and he laughed heartily, raising his glass: "That's right! In this godforsaken place, survival is the ultimate victory!"
"Come on, eat some meat!"
The six of them resumed their previous lively atmosphere, joking with each other and drinking heartily.
Lu Ye, however, shifted his attention to the system.
[Triggering the quest: Wolf's murderous intent!]

After the meal, the group helped each other and walked back along the street towards the main medical building.
Lu Ye deliberately slowed his pace and walked at the very back of the group with Yuri.
He glanced at his system panel in his mind.
Remaining lifespan: 7 days.
He has already wasted three days at the camp, while the rest of the team are still recovering from injuries and don't know when they will be able to receive their next mission.
I can't let my points go to waste at this camp.
With this in mind, Lu Ye made up his mind.
"Boss," Lu Ye tentatively asked, "if I wanted to go on a mission alone, would you agree?"
Yuri stopped and turned around, his gaze sweeping over Lu Ye's face.
"Is there some difficulty?" Yuri frowned. "If it's a lack of money, you can keep that sniper equipment for now; you don't need to pay for it. I can personally lend you another $50,000."
Lu Ye shook his head, feeling somewhat touched: "It's not about the money. It's just... I have a reason why I have to go."
Yuri looked at Lu Ye and remained silent for a few seconds before asking, "Was this arranged by that friend you met this morning?"
Lu Ye nodded.
"What mission? How long will it take?" Yuri continued to ask.
"I don't know," Lu Ye replied truthfully. "He said it's top secret, and the mission's objective and deadline will only be revealed after we set off."
Yuri's expression turned serious.
He looked into Lu Ye's eyes and said, word by word, "Lu, since this is your decision, I won't stop you."
"However, if your mission takes too long and our team receives new orders from the company, we won't wait for you. And I'll find another sniper to replace you. I hope you understand that."
Lu Ye clearly hesitated.
The two walked in silence to the hospital entrance.
From afar, Lu Ye spotted Vasily standing at the bottom of the steps, waiting.
Then Lu Ye stopped, turned to look at Yuri, and said firmly, "I understand. I'm willing to take this risk, and I'll be back before your next mission."
Yuri nodded, seeing that Lu Ye had made up his mind.
The two arrived in front of Vasily.
Yuri sized Vasily up and down: "I won't ask what you're going to do. But I can tell you're not an ordinary mercenary, and the person behind you is no ordinary person either. I only have one thing to say: I hope Lu Ye comes back alive."
Vasily met Yuri's gaze and nodded solemnly: "Don't worry. We're well prepared, there shouldn't be any surprises. If all goes well, we'll be back in two days."
Yuri nodded, then turned to Lu Ye: "I hope you understand that if we receive a mission within the next two days, we will have to find someone to replace you."
Before Lu Ye could speak, Vasily spoke first, his tone confident: "Don't worry, your Black Scythe Squad won't receive any missions until Lu Ye returns. All your medical expenses will be covered by the camp!"
Yuri's eyes narrowed, and he gave Vasily a deep look.
He immediately realized that the forces behind the other party were actually able to directly interfere with the Undertaker's higher-ups!
Yuri didn't say anything more, patted Lu Ye on the shoulder, and turned to walk into the hospital.
"Wait for me for ten minutes." Lu Ye gestured to Vasily, then ran into the hospital room and packed up his SVCh sniper rifle, the DVL-10 he had won, as well as ammunition and a tactical vest.
Upon seeing this, Roman, Artyom, and the others in the ward all stood up.
After Lu Ye finished packing, he looked at everyone and then came to Roman.
Then Roman gave Lu Ye a big hug and patted him on the back: "Brother, take care! Come back alive for a drink!"
"Be careful, don't die out there."
Lu Ye hugged and said goodbye to everyone.
"I'm gone."
-----------------
Carrying a heavy equipment pack, Lu Ye followed Vasily into the second level of the core area.
Upon reaching the entrance to the command center, Vasily remained silent, took out a black magnetic card, swiped it on the reader, and then aimed his eyes at the iris scanner next to him.
"Beep, identity confirmed."
The heavy explosion-proof door slid open slowly to both sides.
This was Lu Ye's first time entering a classified department of the Russian military.
In the center of the hall was a huge LCD tactical screen, flashing high-resolution satellite maps and densely packed red and blue combat markers.
Dozens of uniformed intelligence analysts sat in front of computers, the sound of keyboards clicking and Russian commands echoing through the room.
Signalmen and staff officers wearing headsets moved quickly through the hall, no one looking up at the unfamiliar faces entering.
Vasily did not linger, leading Lu Ye straight to a quiet corridor on the right and pushing open the door to "Operation Conference Room No. 3".
There were already seven people in the room.
Six fully armed soldiers with camouflage paint on their faces sat in front of the oval conference table.
Seated in the main seat was a Russian military officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
When the lieutenant colonel saw Vasily enter, he frowned slightly, then his gaze fell on Lu Ye.
"Vasily, what does this mean?" The lieutenant colonel's voice was filled with suppressed anger.
"This is a top-secret operation. What are you doing bringing in a foreign mercenary who's not part of the official staff?"
Vasily closed the door, his expression calm. He pulled out a chair for Lu Ye to sit down, then looked at the lieutenant colonel and said only four words: "The commander's intention."
Upon hearing this, the lieutenant colonel's anger, which he had been about to unleash, was instantly suppressed.
His expression shifted slightly, he coughed lightly, and then fell silent.
