Chapter 108 Cavalry
The firewall blocked the way forward.
The massive horde of beasts halted before the crisscrossing flames.
The fire spread along the underground ditches, and the high temperature forced a large number of wild animals to turn around and retreat towards the unburned areas.
The pack of black dire wolves, tasked with overseeing the battle, emerged from the mist and the morning light.
They moved like shadows across the plains. As the right-hand men of the gods, the wolf pack displayed remarkable organization. They divided into hundreds of small groups, blocking all escape routes.
Forced by fear, the beasts moved in the direction the gods desired, crossing the traps set by their enemies.
A giant deer, standing three meters tall at the shoulder, attempted to break through the pack from the side, but was immediately spotted by the wolves.
Seven or eight dire wolves immediately flanked from both sides, avoiding the giant deer's sharp antlers and focusing their attack on its hind legs and abdomen.
With its forelimbs severed, the giant deer lost its balance and collapsed. The dire wolves swiftly severed its neck blood vessels, then dispersed to find their next prey. The lifeless giant deer was quickly trampled into pieces by the dense herd behind it.
The wolf pack acted like a mobile city wall, constantly pressing forward.
Thousands of extraordinary creatures are trapped in a narrow area. Ahead, flames soar into the sky; behind, black wolves bar their fangs. The beasts, caught between a rock and a hard place, are pressed together.
Most of them died from being hit and trampled by the surrounding creatures, but because of their large numbers, many beasts still managed to leap across the fire line, charge towards the city walls, or break through the encircling dire wolves and escape to safety.
And below the city wall.
The heavy city gate opened as the winch turned.
The first warhorse charged out of the smoke.
Horse hooves crushed the scorched earth, sending sparks flying in all directions.
The tamed white-spotted grey horses of the Sinker tribe, clad in heavy metal armor, leaped over the flames with their rams.
These strong and fierce mounts are born with a wild nature. They possess a carrying capacity and speed far exceeding that of ordinary horses. Their thick limbs alternate in a frenzied gallop, and they dare to show their horseshoes even when facing endless enemies.
They charged in droves, their hooves clashing together, making the ground tremble.
The leading knight is Xin An.
She lowered her upper body and held the heavy steel spear horizontally.
The cavalry following behind formed a neat front line. The innate strength of the Xin tribe endowed the warriors with superhuman power, enough to keep their horses firmly under control during high-speed charges and withstand the enormous recoil from spear thrusts.
Dark golden battle aura flowed across the bodies of most of the warriors, converging along their armor and onto their spears. Meanwhile, the tip of Xin An's spear ignited with a scorching fire, and the extraordinary power combined with the momentum of the galloping warhorse infused the unit with a destructive force capable of piercing through heavy armor.
They are the elite of the elite. Among humans, even those with several traits derived from the [Evolutionary Hunter], whose starting point is far higher than that of their fellow Sinkers, are still valuable resources. The Extraordinary Cavalry are the elite of the elite.
Quality was achieved at the expense of cost.
The leading spiky brown bear knocked over two wild beasts blocking its path and attempted to topple the cavalryman in front of it.
But the cavalry were faster than it had anticipated and were already upon it.
Using the momentum of his full-speed sprint, Xin An thrust his spear straight out, transforming it into a dark golden streak.
The spear tip struck the brown bear in the face.
The inner fire erupted the instant it made contact with the target; the combined effect of high temperature and kinetic energy pierced through the hard defenses. The spear pierced the skull, flames seared the brain, and the brown bear fell backward, crashing heavily to the ground.
The warhorse did not stop, carrying Xin'an past the corpses and continuing its gallop.
The cavalry followed, charging out from the side of the wall of fire. They did not blindly rush into the center of the beast horde, but maintained their distance, cutting at high speed along the edge of the wall of fire and the beast horde. Spears rose and fell, and the light of battle aura intertwined on the plain under the bright daylight.
A giant rock lizard on the flank roared.
Its thick tail swept across with a whooshing sound, attempting to smash the approaching cavalry.
The cavalryman pulled on the reins, and the white-spotted gray horse leaped up, dodging the sweeping giant tail. The warrior twisted his waist in mid-air, gripping the spear shaft tightly and thrusting downwards. The spear tip, imbued with battle aura, pierced the giant lizard's eye socket, heading straight for the depths of its skull. The giant lizard let out a mournful cry, its limbs convulsing and going limp.
The cavalry followed to fill the gaps and maintain the charge formation. The knights charged in a consistent direction, cutting along the edge of the beast horde. Any monster attempting to escape the wall of fire or stray from the crowded area would be met with their lances.
Even though each charge would result in cavalrymen being thrown from their horses, bitten, and trampled, ultimately disappearing without a trace among the beasts, the remaining cavalry would still complete the predetermined route, driving away these wild animals.
The battlefield reached a stalemate.
The massive beast tide was completely trapped in place. From the air, it appeared as a vortex, propelled by two forces.
The shells of giant beetles shattered in the crowd. Horned beasts, vying for footholds, plunged their horns into the bellies of their kin. Driven by survival instincts, various supernatural creatures pointed their fangs at everything in their path. Swarms of venomous insects attacked the lightly armored creatures, only to be melted by acid-spitting monsters from behind. Blood and flesh flew everywhere; the monstrous horde, caught between advancing and retreating, became a gigantic grinder of flesh.
Many monsters perished from being trampled and torn apart by their own kind.
On the high earthen slope, the Black Wolf King stopped walking.
The wolf pack was already weakened by the chaos caused by the worms inside their bodies, making them unable to withstand the impact of the frontal battle.
The beasts driven over to serve as supplies have yet to be defeated. If this situation continues, the monsters on the plains will be exhausted in their infighting.
In the sky, the two-legged wyvern noticed the ground had come to a standstill.
Its head turned toward the city gate, its vertical pupils reflecting the carnage of beasts below and the constantly shifting cavalry of the Fire Clan. It too was yearning for war and flesh and blood, and the small, weak creature made it feel displeased.
Even though wyverns and dragons are completely different creatures, the thin layer of dragon blood still allows them to do whatever they want in the war between gods.
The behemoth stopped circling, its two pairs of dragon wings folded in mid-air, and the flying dragon adjusted its posture, preparing to dive.
The wind howled on the city wall.
Xin Zang drew his battle axe from behind him.
His gaze swept across the plain to the colossal creature plummeting below the clouds. Only through their mobility and the terrain's advantage were Xin'an's cavalry force managing to barely contain the beast on the ground.
Once wyverns join the battle, their imposing presence combined with their aerial attacks will shatter cavalry formations in an instant.
Warhorses may not be able to withstand the residual force of a swooping adult dragon; any conventional military formation would crumble under a single blow.
We must not allow that monster to interfere with the ground battlefield.
Dark golden flames surged from Xin Cang's body, winding around the heavy battle axe along his arm. The intense heat distorted the surrounding air.
He bent his knees and stepped onto the stone bricks at the edge of the city wall, preparing to meet the huge dragon shadow in mid-air.
He had to personally intervene and keep the second-order calamity hanging in the air.
