Chapter 42 Returning the Property to its Rightful Owner
Chapter 42 Returning the Property to its Rightful Owner
A dark cloud drifted slowly in from outside the window, obscuring the rising sun.
With the sunlight blocked, the ward immediately darkened, and the atmosphere suddenly became heavy.
Looking at the composed Maroni, Levi knew that if he didn't teach this guy a lesson, it would be difficult to get him to cooperate.
"Hey, Mr. Maroney, everyone relax a bit."
Li Wei smiled and spread his hands to show that he meant no harm. "I'm just here to talk about some things, there's no need to be so nervous."
Livy's harmless smile brought a smile to Maroni's face, and he looked as triumphant as a victorious general.
Just then, a ray of sunlight pierced through the dark clouds, and the entire ward became bright again.
The light shone on Li Wei's hair, as if it were plating him with a layer of golden armor.
Just then, Li Wei walked up to Maroni, smiled at him, and revealed a set of neat white teeth.
"Do you know who you're talking to, you bastard!"
Li Wei slapped Maroni across the face, then pulled out a gun and pressed it against Maroni's bloated head. "You dare to resist arrest with a gun? I have every reason to fire back."
The sudden turn of events stunned Maroni's henchmen. When they came to their senses, they found their boss with a gun pointed at his head.
Feeling the cold muzzle of the gun at his temple, Maronny instantly snapped back to reality.
Based on Li Wei's crazy tendencies, he believed that Li Wei and the Joker had something in common.
"Hey, Mr. Levi, calm down..."
Maroni raised his hands. "What's the matter? Let's sit down and talk it over."
"Have a good chat? There's nothing to talk about."
Li Wei glanced at Maroni's henchmen. "Tell them to put down their guns and all squat against the wall!"
"Didn't you hear what Mr. Li Wei said? Hurry up and do as he says!"
At Maroni's shout, all the henchmen threw their guns on the ground and obediently squatted against the wall.
The commotion in the ward caught Robin's attention. After entering, he collected all the pistols on the floor at Levi's instruction.
"Robin, keep an eye on these guys. I need to talk to Mr. Maroney about something."
As Li Wei spoke, he gestured to Robin to send everyone else to the balcony.
After some "friendly" communication, Maroni promised to keep yesterday's events a secret.
To convince Li Wei of his sincerity, he specially presented some rather private photos.
Although it was a bit cringeworthy, Levi accepted it because Maroni was so insistent.
Under the rooster-haired man's shocked gaze, Li Wei took the car keys he had just returned from his pocket.
He didn't want to be caught up by Maroni's men as soon as he went downstairs.
...
"Mr. Li Wei, you were so cool just now!"
Robin was beaming with excitement in the Mercedes Raptor pickup truck.
Despite his sense of justice, he suffered quite a bit when dealing with gangsters in Gotham, a godforsaken place.
Li Wei's actions today undoubtedly gave him a great sense of satisfaction.
"Young man, you must never be as impulsive as I was."
Li Wei said, "This behavior is dangerous; you shouldn't imitate it."
Although his behavior today may seem reckless, he is immune to harm, and being alone, he is not afraid of Maroni.
Robin is not like him. If you try to learn from him, you'll probably end up in some sewer.
When Levi returned to his office, he saw Gordon standing at the end of the corridor making a phone call.
Although he was speaking in a very low voice, you could still vaguely hear what he was saying.
"Barbara, about yesterday..."
After hanging up the phone, Gordon saw Levi and nodded slightly.
He didn't speak, his eyes filled with exhaustion.
"Relax, buddy, I think you need a break."
Li Wei smiled and handed Maroni's "gift" to Gordon. "I've taken care of things on my end. All three parties involved last night have said they will keep quiet."
Maroni gave me this specifically to show his determination.
Gordon curiously opened the envelope, glanced at it, and then put on the Pain Mask.
"You despicable bastard, you should pay me for seeing these photos."
Seeing that Gordon was in the mood to joke with him, Levi felt much relieved. He was really worried that the guy would be overwhelmed by the pressure.
"By the way, I noticed Ramirez isn't doing too well, so I invited her back to the police station..."
"You decide these things, buddy. I trust your judgment."
Before Li Wei could finish speaking, Gordon interrupted him, and the words he had prepared were swallowed back down his throat.
After agreeing on everything, the two walked out of the police station side by side.
Gotham's streets have returned to their usual hustle and bustle, with pedestrians hurrying by, unaware of the turmoil the city experienced last night.
Only they themselves know that what sustains this city, besides so-called justice, is a heavy lie.
The sunlight dispelled some of the dark clouds, but it couldn't dispel the gloom in my heart.
Levi drove away from the police station, gripping the steering wheel tightly. The next stop was Arkham Asylum.
Li Wei took out the coin and gently twirled it in his palm.
Heads, tails, heads, tails... He suddenly clenched his fist tightly, holding the coin firmly in his hand.
The high walls of Arkham Asylum, like a silent behemoth, crouch on the edge of Gotham, exuding oppression and despair.
The pickup truck stopped in front of the mental hospital gate. The guards carefully checked the identification before slowly opening the heavy iron gate.
Li Wei followed the guards inside, where the smell of disinfectant filled the air, making him feel very uncomfortable.
Screams and mutterings could be heard intermittently from the wards on both sides of the corridor.
The sound came through the iron bars, low and dark, like a wail from hell.
"Harvey is very uncooperative," the guard whispered to Levi. "He hasn't said a word since yesterday, just staring intently out the window."
Li Wei nodded, feeling a tightness in his chest.
They have conducted a psychiatric evaluation on Harvey, and the result was "severe post-traumatic stress disorder with dissociative identity disorder".
In short, the "two-faced" personality has completely replaced the former Knight of Light, Harvey Dent.
The guard led Li Wei to the ward door, briefly explained the precautions, and then left under the pretext of having diarrhea, leaving the two of them alone.
Seeing how sensible the guard was, Li Wei couldn't help but sigh that money really is useful.
Behind the thick glass, Harvey, dressed in a straitjacket, sat on the bed with his back to the door.
Sunlight streamed through the iron bars onto him, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
Li Wei stepped forward and gently tapped on the glass. Harvey slowly turned around.
The burned side of his face looked even more grotesque in the sunlight, but the madness in his eyes was gone, replaced by a deathly stillness, like a stagnant pool.
When Harvey saw that the person who came was Li Wei, his eyes finally lit up.
"Mr. Levi, you've arrived," Harvey said, his voice hoarse as if he hadn't spoken in a long time, revealing a deep weariness.
Li Wei nodded slightly, took out a coin from his pocket, and handed it over.
"Put it away and return it to its rightful owner."
Harvey glanced at the coin, then shook his head.
"I no longer need it. If you like it, keep it as a souvenir, Mr. Li Wei."
After saying all this, Harvey hesitated for a moment, and finally asked cautiously:
"Mr. Levi, I'd like to ask, how is Rachel doing?"
